Q: What is Reiki?

A: Reiki (pronounced ray-key) is a Japanese word for Universal Life Force Energy. It is a system of healing which involves a Reiki practitioner channelling this healing energy (Reiki) to the client by lightly placing their hands on or near them. The Reiki energy then flows to the client, triggering a healing and re-balancing of that person's energy.

Reiki works with our bodies' own natural ability to heal itself, and the Reiki accelerates this ability. Reiki healing also works on all levels of being; Physical, Emotional, Mental and Spiritual which allows deep and complete healing to occur as it addresses the underlying cause of illness as well as the symptoms.

Q: What happens during a treatment?

A: The session will begin with a chat to give the client an idea of what to expect, and to begin to relax. This also gives me an idea about what the client is requiring from the session. Usually it is part of the session to spend time talking about the concerns/problems that have prompted the need for a treatment, with a view to release/unburden through councelling as well as teaching new positive ways to move forward in life. The combination of coaching and reiki are powerful transformative tools.

When ready, the client will get up on the treatment table, remaining fully clothed, just removing shoes, and will lie on their back. (If it is not possible or comfortable to do so, they will lie on their front, side or be treated sitting in a chair instead.) A blanket is provided for extra warmth and comfort.

I usually begin working at the head, placing my hands lightly on the client or holding my hands near them as is appropriate, working all around the head, face and neck, which relaxes the mind and helps the body to relax. I will then gradually move down, working over the whole body until I get to the feet. I will spend more or less time in each hand position depending on what is needed in that area of the body. The whole body is always treated even if there is one particular problem area. I work through the chakras as I mopve through the body, balancing the energies of each and bringing balance to the whole body by the end of the treatment.

After the treatment, the client has time to sit and have some water, and to come round before the end of the session. A short chat helps to clarify what happened or what was felt during the session.

Q: Is it still working if I can't feel the energy?

A: Yes, many people aren't aware of feeling the different sensations that are associated with Reiki, such as heat, cold, tingling or pressure although this does not affect the quality of the treatment or mean that it's not working for you. It just means that you aren't as aware of subtle energies, but the Reiki is still flowing into you and is healing and rebalancing you. Often, people become more aware of the sensations after a few sessions as they become more attuned to Reiki energy.

Q: Is it normal to see colours?

A: Yes, lots of people see beautiful colours during their treatments and it is a sign of deep relaxation. Many people see these colours during other treatments too and during meditation. Sometimes the colours can be an indication of areas of our being that are being healed during that treatment. The chakra colour associated to that area of the body can give you an idea about what is being healed. Purple, mauve, pink, gold, blue and white are the most common colours seen and are all associated with our upper chakras, spiritual awareness, opening and connection.

Q: Do I remain clothed?

A: Yes, you just need to remove your shoes and any restrictive items, such as your watch, glasses etc.

Q: Is it normal to feel cold during or after a treatment?

A: Yes, some people do feel very cold during and/or after a Reiki treatment, this is nothing to worry about. It is usually a sign that a powerful healing is taking place for you. The cold energies of Reiki are usually associated with emotional healing, strengthening and re-balancing. Usually emotional healing will be occurring if you feel cold. This is a good sign! You will soon feel emotionally stronger, more balanced and calm.

Q: Does it matter if I fall asleep?

A: No! Deep relaxation is one of the main aims of all treatments and this will often lead to sleep.  I will always take dozing off in a session as a real compliment because it means that you are relaxed enough to drift away. This means that the Reiki can really get to work deeply without the conscious mind in the way!

Q: What is a Reiki attunement?

A: Reiki is a system of healing which involves Universal healing energy and sacred symbols. It is the Reiki symbols that focus and magnify the Universal energy.

During an attunement to Reiki, the Reiki  Master will send different Reiki symbols and energy into various chakras (energy centres) of the recipient.  The symbols stay with us for life, and it is the symbols which allow us to bring through the Universal energy for healing.

It is the attunement to Reiki which is all important, and there are various ways of doing this, depending on the type of Reiki being attuned.

There are many (over 300) Reiki symbols in existence,  each one bringing through a particular type, or frequency of healing energy that has particular healing qualities. The more symbols you are attuned with, the more Reiki energy you are able to channel. Each Level of Reiki is more powerful than the last because during the attunement, you are receiving extra symbols which means you can channel more Reiki.

Q: What type of Reiki do you teach?

A: I teach a combination of both Traditional Usui Reiki and up-dated Reiki, which includes extra Reiki symbols from the original system of Reiki. This up-dated combination is perfect for the changing times we all live in now, as it is more powerful and effective than traditional Reiki alone. This system of Reiki uses 13 Reiki symbols in total, instead of the usual 3, and it is this alone that makes this type of Reiki more effective.

Q: What is your Reiki Lineage?

A: My Reiki Lineage is like our Reiki Family Tree, showing who has been attuned by whom. It is possible to trace mine back to Mikao Usui himself, which gives good verification about this branch of Reiki:

Mikao Usui

Chujiro Hayashi

Hawayo Takata

Iris Ishikuro

Arthur Robertson

Rick and Emma Ferguson

Margarette L. Shelton

Kathleen Ann Milner

Shimara Kumara

Tamisha

Ruth West

Q: Do I need any previous experience before training in Reiki?

A: No, many people come to Reiki without having had a treatment or knowing anything about Reiki.  My courses are designed to suit those who have no previous experience in Reiki as well as those who have had treatments before or have experience with other therapies.

All that is required is the willingness to learn and experience Reiki! It's never too late to learn. The courses are easy to follow and notes are provided.

Q: I'm worried the attunement won't work on me, is this possible?

A: No, the attunement always works for everyone who wishes to receive one.
It doesn't matter if you are a very 'spiritual' person or not. You don't need to be an experienced healer to make it work.
It really isn't a question about being 'good enough'. Remember that we are all equal, and our intention to receive an attunement is the important thing.
Remember that it is possible to attune animals too and it always works for them.

Q: Will I have to remember everything we cover during the course, or take notes?

A: No, everything that is covered on the course will be already written down for you in the notes provided.
There is no need to worry about remembering everything, the important thing on the day is to take away with you the experience of giving and receiving Reiki and how that felt.
You will learn more through direct experience of working with the Reiki energy than reading about it.

Q: Are the courses certificated?

A: Yes, all my Reiki courses are certificated to verify that you have received an attunement and instruction in healing to the relevant level.

Q: Can I get insurance once I have trained in Reiki?

A: You can get insurance once you have received Level Two. This is the level you must train up to in order to work professionally with Reiki.
Level Two provides you with a more powerful attunement which in turn means that your treatments will be more effective.

Q: How long do I have to wait until I can take my next level attunement?

A: This is something that will be different for each person. You will usually have a good idea, or 'feeling' about when you're ready to go on to the next level.
If you're thinking about training to work professionally with Reiki, you can still take your Level Two as soon as a month after Level One, but it is recommended  that you give yourself plenty of time after you receive Level Two to gain confidence and experience in giving treatments before offering them on a professional basis.
Recommended minimum times between Level One and Two is a month, and between Level Two and Three, six months.

Q: Am I too old to learn Reiki?

A: Absolutely not!  Many people regret that they haven't learnt Reiki earlier in their life, but it's really important to remember that it's never too late to make a change in our life or lifestyle.

FAQ's after training in Reiki:

Q: Is it ok to give treatments to others during my 21 day clearing?

A: Yes, your are free to give Reiki treatments as soon as you feel ready. This varies, and for some the 21 day clearing is a time reserved for their own healing process. Others can't wait to get started and try out their Reiki skills! I always advise that you must do what feels right to you.

Q: When I give myself Reiki, I can't feel much energy. Am I doing something wrong?

A: It is really common that people often don't feel the Reiki energy as much during self-healing as they do when receiving from others. Usually the problem occurs when we forget to take a few minutes to relax first. Maybe put some relaxing music on, light candles etc, just as you would do if you were giving a treatment to someone else. It's important to remember that our minds and bodies need to relax in order to receive Reiki most effectively.

Also, because the Reiki is coming through you to you, it is possible that you won't feel as much sensation as you would when receiving from someone else. The sensation can be due to the Reiki changing to suit the recipients needs as it enters their system.

Some other tips are:

Take some deep breaths, letting go of any tension as you exhale.

Do some stretching before you sit or lie down to give yourself Reiki to relax your body.

Meditate for ten minutes to quiet your mind. This makes a big difference, and a 20 minute meditation before giving yourself Reiki works wonders to boost the amount of Reiki that comes through.

Make sure you give yourself quiet time to practice Reiki on yourself.

Think about what you were doing directly before sitting down to treat yourself last time. Did you take time to get into the right frame of mind first? Sometimes, when we expect quick results, we are actually  trying too hard and block the energy. Relax!

It is also possible that you are not as aware of the Reiki because your sensitivity hasn't been developed yet. Lots of people have this and it usually takes a short while of practise with Reiki before they become more aware of the energy. Take time to practise every day on yourself  and take time to tune in to what is really going on during the session.

Remember we always get what we need in a session, and it could be possible that the Reiki is working on a subtle level for you at the moment.

Q: When can I go on to learn the next Level?

A: This is something that will be different for each person. You will usually have a good idea, or 'feeling' about when you're ready to go on to the next level.

If you're thinking about training to work professionally with Reiki, you can still take your Level Two as soon as a month after Level One, but it is recommended  that you give yourself plenty of time after you receive Level Two to gain confidence and experience in giving treatments before offering them on a professional basis.

Recommended minimum times between Level One and Two is a month, and between Level Two and Three, six months.

Q: I haven't used my Reiki in a long time, will it still work?

A: There are always times when people don't feel the need to use the Reiki they've been attuned to, and often wonder if it will still work as well. Once you have been attuned properly, you will have the ability to channel Reiki for the rest of your life regardless of whether you use it regularly or not.

Q: Are there things I can do to make the Reiki more effective?

A: Aside from taking your next Level attunement, there are some things which can make Reiki more effective:

Regular stretching and exercise makes a difference as the Reiki is travelling through your body when giving treatments. If your body's muscles are more relaxed then the Reiki can literally flow more easily through you.

Meditation can make a difference as it helps you to become more mentally attuned to Reiki and helps you to become more detached which helps us to take a 'back seat' whilst working. Meditation also helps us to remain grounded which helps us to focus on the task at hand, remaining in the 'here and now'.

Q: I'm not happy about the way I was taught. Can I be re-attuned?

A: I have re-taught several people who have been taught in large groups, by a friend who had learnt Reiki but didn't perhaps teach very thoroughly and a few that had trained with someone who they didn't get on with or had a bad experience with. It is possible to be re-attuned, and although it may not be necessary as far as the attunement itself is concerned, it can make the difference in terms of confidence, that person hopefully now will feel positive about Reiki and will use it to enrich their lives.

Reflexology Frequently Asked Questions:

Q: Can I have Reflexology if I'm pregnant?

A: It is safe to have Reflexology after the first trimester, and can be very beneficial for both mother and baby through pregnancy. It can be great to have a course of treatment  through pregnancy and after giving birth too, to help your body recover! It is amazing how the feet really do change during pregnancy, with the reflex points that correspond to the womb getting more swollen as pregnancy continues. After giving birth, they become baggy and loose!

Q: Can I have Reflexology if I have bunions, corns, verrucas or athletes foot?

A: Yes, if you suffer with bunions and they are sore, I won't work on those parts of your feet. If they feel ok, then a normal treatment will be given and can be beneficial to help the feet become more flexible and comfortable again.

If you suffer with corns, verrucas or athletes foot you can still have Reflexology although I won't work the areas of the foot that are affected.

Q: Can I have Reflexology if I've sprained or broken my ankle?

A: No, it is not advisable to give treatment in these cases although once on the mend, it can be great to have a treatment to regain flexibility in the foot and ankle. In these cases it is possible to give a hand reflexology treatment instead.

Q: What is hand Reflexology?

A: It is possible to give a hand reflexology treatment in cases where the feet can't be worked on.  The nerve endings which end in the feet  (known a reflexes) also end in the hands and by massaging and putting pressure on these points in the hand, it creates a healing and balancing effect through the body, just a foot reflexology does.

Q: I've got ticklish feet, will I be able to relax?

A: Lots of people are ticklish on their feet, but Reflexology is a combination of firm touch and massage. It is not a tickly touch and is very relaxing.

Q: I'm very self-conscious of my feet. What if my feet smell or are sweaty?

A: Lots of people worry about how their feet look and smell but please don't let that put you off having a treatment. Remember, if I had a problem with feet, I wouldn't be working with them!  At the beginning of the treatment I wipe the feet with moist tissues to clean and refresh them. Most people soon relax into the session and soon forget their original concerns.

Q: If I can't have my feet treated, is there an alternative?

A: It is possible to give a hand reflexology treatment in cases where the feet can't be worked on.  The nerve endings which end in the feet  (known a reflexes) also end in the hands and by massaging and putting pressure on these points in the hand, it creates a healing and balancing effect through the body, just a foot reflexology does.
